I loved Demon Copperhead and the audio actor who performed it! Learned so much about a part of the country we tend not to learn about. IMO, you can read wikipedia summary of David Copperfield to get the comparative gist. But also, in support of Dickens, it might be fair to note that most of his novels were serialized, so longer than they needed to be.
True, true. I tried to pretend I was on some dock, waiting for the next Dickens chapter to be delivered. I actually do appreciate the way Dickens can craft a sentence, so there was that.
I LOVED Demon Copperhead. I’m glad you read it!! You are right, the writing is visceral it IS hard to read at times, but those moments of beauty make it worthwhile. :) I’m not sure if I’ll ever read David Copperfield (though you make a compelling case for why one should 😂), but I definitely am going to check out Heroine! Thanks for the rec! And for such a great comparison piece.
Lot of overhead to me, reading the genesis book before the modern novel. Demon Copperhead is one of my favorites this year and I can’t remember anything about David Copperfield. It took me a few attempts to get past the second chapter, but the voice ultimately drew me in. I didn’t read Our Town before Tom Lake; don’t think it would have helped. Tom Lake came off as contrived, the daughters not ringing true.
So much overhead! Lol. Why do I give myself these tasks?!?
I get what you mean about TOM LAKE. I liked the book, but I see where the daughters didn't ring true. I sure can't picture my own girls desperate to hear about my life when they are in their 20s, no matter how much of a boring pandemic we might be in.
Loved Demon, but couldn't get through Dickens. There's a decent movie that came out on Hulu that caught me up on the main points. Thanks for the recs! Adding James to my list
Demon Copperhead took up my whole Thanksgiving break last year, and it was glorious. So glad you joined the party. 🙂
Thanks for the interview lesson idea. I teach a profile essay where students interview someone and then develop an angle through which to tell their story (for example, we read a 2021 Time profile of Simone Biles that uses her story to reflect on larger topics like mental health and attitudes toward black women in sports). It's my favorite essay to grade because they have so much more buy-in when they are writing about someone they care about!

And yes, the audio actor was so good!!

Demon was SOOO good! Be prepared for another heartbreak if you read Heroine.

A movie! I should have just watched a movie. Why don't I ever think of that?
I only did because Hulu ads
Dickens' had a great eye for detail. He brings history to life. And many of his characters still walk about today.
I deeply appreciate Dickens' way with words, to describe things and people.
