I have a book by Mike Duncan about Lafayette sitting on my shelf, and shame on me I haven't read it! This post is a good reminder to push it higher on my reading list.
Love Sarah Vowell and her book on Lafayette has been on my list for a while. I’m moving up in the queue. And that WWI quote makes me teary too. And my patriotism can be hard to rouse. But there’s something about Lafayette’s enduring idealism that makes him such a beloved historical figure and the idea of repaying that debt… kind of a Captain America moment- shamelessly schmaltzy but still moving.
I'm obsessed with Sarah Vowell. Her book talks on YouTube about Lafayette are super fun to listen to as well, in case you don't have time for the book just yet.
From Lafayette to Swift - that's quite a distance to travel, obsession wise.
Unsurprisingly, I don't know of any memorials to Lafayette in the UK and we don't learn about him much at school, if at all. I guess some visitors to the UK from the UK would be surprised to find his name on so many streets.
He's not really taught in the US either. I doubt most people could have even connected the Street name to the person until Lin Manuel Miranda's Hamilton.
When I got the notification and saw "Lafayette," I was confused, because that's where *I* live. (Or one of them, at least.) Now I feel bad I don't know much about him. Adding the book to an Amazon list!

Oh, I should check that one out!
I don’t know how you do it, but find the COOLEST historical fiction books to recommend. I can’t wait to read/listen to this book over the summer!
Aw thanks! I read this one awhile ago and it just popped back up in my mind last week.
I just started Vowell’s audiobook, and I’m loving it! Such a great recommendation.
Love anything by Sarah Vowell!

I see. So not really a household name, then.

That's so cool! I wondered if I'd reach any Lafayette dwellers!
